This is a gorgeous
rendition of a Kazan Russian/Greek Orthodox Byzantine Icon labeled Theotokos
Portaitissa of Mount Athos.
Signed by the artist Morozov P.N.
Description: This is a beautifully hand painted wooden enameled egg.
The portrait has textured areas on the sleeves and tunics.
It has the icon of Virgin
Mary – Theotokos Portaitissa of Mount Athos on one side. Mary wears a reddish
brown halug or a tunic with pale orange trim.
She has a golden halo around her
On either side of Mary are ΜΡ ΘΥ which when seen on an icon means Mary, the
Theotokos, the Mother of God.
Jesus is in a pale
orange tunic with tan and blue design. He holds a small scroll in his left hand
and a flower in is right.
The letters “IC XC” is a Christogram,
a monogram of Jesus’ name.
The egg is done in
beautiful bold colors. The icon side has a bright green background with golden
scrollwork around the edge of the icon.
The back of the egg is done in a rich
blue color. In large print is the Cyrillic lettering-ХB, which means Христос
Воскресе / Christ is Risen.
