This is a really outstanding, heavy English VICTORIAN solid sterling silver THREE PIECE tea which was made in London, England in 1840 by the illustrious Georgian silversmith, Benoni (Benjamin) Stephens at his Camomile Street workshops. This wonderfully stylish and fine quality set comes from a private country house and is in very good condition. It consists of a beautiful teapot, a pretty milk jug and a two handled sugar bowl. Each piece is fully hallmarked with BS, lion passant (sterling silver assay mark),leopard head, E, Victoria duty mark showing that each piece was hallmarked in London in 1840.
This wonderful set has a stunning and very stylishVictorian baluster lobed cushion shape withdecorated rims,raised on ornate cast feet andan ornatesilver finial and handle to the teapot. This set is avery large sized tea set and is of wonderful quality and very substantial. The set weighs1426.1 grams - giving a total weight of well over 45 3/4 troy oz. Unusually, each piece in this set is NOT engraved!!!
The teapot (capacity ofa full 2imperial pints) measures7 1/4" in diameter,11" from spout to handle and stands 6 1/4" tall. The milk jug measures 4 3/4" in diameter,6 1/2" from spout to handle and stands 4 3/8" tall. The sugar bowl measures 6" in diameter, 8 1/4" across the handles and stands 4 1/2" tall.
The sugar bowl is in lovely condition with less than the usual light surface scratching and no splits or repairs, only a little distortion and just one dent and a very few dings. The milk jug is in lovely condition with less than the usual light surface scratching and no splits or repairs, almost no distortion and NO dents with almost NO dings. The teapot is in lovely condition with less than the usual light surface scratching and no splits or repairs, almost no distortion and NO dents and just a few dings. The teapot finial is still firm with NO looseness or distortion to the hinge. There is NO play to the teapot handle - with less than the usual wear. Very minor defects that I mention only for complete accuracy.
A really lovely EARLY VICTORIAN set as you can see from the photographs in lovely condition after almost 175 years of use- at a VERY low start and . Postage will be 25.00GBP both within the UK and to international destinations (in 2 parcels).
