Tintype Photo of Pretty Black Woman w/Plaid Shawl, Day Dress & Hat

I have acquired a unique collection of photographs and Ephemera dating between 1914 to 1916 from a woman named Susan Carter. Ms. Carter was born around 1884 in Meigs County, Ohio before moving to Athens, Ohio to become a domestic worker in the home of of Frederick Bush; owner, publisher and editor of the Athens Messenger, a daily newspaper from Athens, Ohio. She managed to save enough money to purchase a lot and build a home in Athens, a remarkable feat for the time being a single black woman with a third grade education. Ms. Carter remained in Athens until her death in 1956 where she was buried in the West Union Street Cemetery. She saved all the receipts from the lot and the building materials, and those, along with a number of personal letters, war correspondences, tintype photos, cabinet photos and real photo postcards were all found in a purse acquired at an estate sale last year. I will be offering the contents of this purse over the next few days, so if you are interested in old photographs (one with a black Civil War veteran) and Ephemera from the WWI Era, please watch my sales.

In this sale you are viewing a tintype photo of a very pretty black girl. She does not appear to be financially well-off since she is wearing a plain day dress, a plaid wool shawl and a very plain hat. This appears to be the same woman who's picture is in the ornate "With Compliments" card I am also selling.

INSURANCE: Since has taken away the insurance option in the listing, it is up to you to decide if you wish it insured or not. Please indicate BEFORE PAYMENT so I can include it into your invoice.
