THE HOBBIT J R R TOLKIEN1946 – First Edition OVERALL FOURTH IMPRESSIONVERY RARE GEORGE ALLEN AND UNWINI have for sale a very early and much collectable edition of The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. First published in 1937, this copy is a fourth impression from 1946 and includes the very rare original dust jacket. It comes bound in its original green cloth boards with black titles and is in good condition and solid throughout considering it is now heading on 70 years old! The slightly leaning boards have maintained their colour well as shown and just a little rubbing on corners/edges. Internally the book is clean and printed with war economy paper. Unusually there is NO inscription. A little foxing to maps and front few pages but no tears or any other damage noted. What is special about this sale is the book includes the original dust jacket despite having a rough life! At one stage the jacket has suffered numerous severe tears and knocks. Only the front flap is unaffected. The original ‘selotape’ has been removed and archival tape used to strengthen. Regrettably there are still some pieces missing though a good restorer could help further I am sure. So overall an early copy of The Hobbit and one that is rarely seen at a reasonable price.
