Here is a fantastic flat rimmed soup or salad bowl manufactured by Syracuse China in 1920 for use at The Toy Town Tavern, located in Winchendon, Massachusetts. The Toy Town Tavern is now the home of the Winchendon School Golf Club.
The Toy Town Tavern got its name from the town of Winchendon which had the nickname Toy Town because of the large amounts of toys that were manufactured there at the Converse Toy Company. In 1912 he reconstructed the old farmhouse and opened the Toy Town Tavern overlooking Lake Watatic. Many famous people and celebrities stayed at the tavern. The great inventor Thomas Edison, Norman Rockwell and his wife, Joseph Kennedy and his family and President Taft enjoyed many weekends at the tavern. The Toy Town Tavern was a year-round resort that offered golf, tennis, horseback riding, skating, snow-shoeing and tobogganing. In 1917 the tavern’s ski jump was reported to be the longest east of St. Paul, Minnesota. The B&M Railroad also went through the town.
This bowl measures 9 inches across and stands 1 ½ inches up from the tabletop. It has two thin green stripes and one dark orange stripe around the middle of the rim and features the green Toy Town Tavern logo on one side. The bottom is marked: OPCo Syracuse China, A-4 (April, 1920).
This bowl is in eggsellent condition with no chips, cracks, or crazing, It has some dark, pencil type marks around the edge of the well in two places, and another small dark smudge in the bottom of the well. There is a small dot under the glaze directly under the logo in the well. The logo decal itself is a bit smudged – a manufacturing flaw under the glaze. This bowl has no utensil or stacking marks or surface scratches and it has a nice shiny glaze.
