Torquay Terracotta Vase Design Possibly By Dr Dresser, With Henry Tooth Glaze?:
Torquay Terracotta Vase. Possible Christopher Dresser Design. Very Rare
Vase Cover and Dish.
Very Rare Example.
Description:Here for sale is an exceptional Torquay vase dating from the turn of the century. It has a mark to the base in the form of a monogram.
This has a stunning multicoloured glaze. The sale house I bought this from stated that this was possibly designed by Dr Christopher Dresser this is from a well established and reputable west country sale house (document available). I don't know the basis of this reckoning, my own research has found some pieces designed by Dresser including one with this same distinctive glaze (link below).
glaze is very sophisticated and almost looks like glass, the high gloss finish is very similar to a flambe glaze.
It has also been suggested to me that it may be a Henry Tooth glaze but I can neither verify this as I can not find another example.
However I am sure you buyers and collectors know a lot more than I do about this piece and will make your own minds up. What I can say for certain is this is an interesting, very nice and rare example of a late 18th -early 19th Century Torquay Terracotta vase dish and cover that seems to generate debate and discussion between "Experts".
Dating from around 1880-1910 this is a good example from a period where leading potters were experimenting with different glazes.
Overall this is a very nice high quality collectors piece that is as beautiful as it is rare.
Condition:Condition is good. There are a few chips to the base they are on the bottom inside the rim and only visible when you turn the vase upside down to examine it, it is possible they are where some excess glaze has been removed and could have been ground down at the factory. There are possibly 2 tiny glaze chips also at the base, they are only visible under magnification. The lid and base are both in very good condition, with no chips cracks or repairs. The glaze does have crazing which is normal for something of this age.
