Torrhen Stark, Game Of Thrones Coin, .999 Silver, 1/10 Troy Ounce, Winterfell :
For sale: One Pure silver "stag" coin from the old North Kingdom of Westeros. Mint fresh condition, 1/10 troy ounce of .999 fine silver. This example is from the most recent mintage, done on specially re-polished dies.
My name is Tom Maringer. Almost ten years ago I approached George R.R. Martin about making coins for his mythical realm, and we formalized a licensing agreement to that end. In those days he was just a couple novels into the Song of Ice and Fire series and his books were just starting to be noticed. Today of course they have become immensely popular and have become the subject of the GAME OF THRONES video series by HBO. The license for making these coins predates the Game of Thrones involvement of HBO and there is no influence from them on the design or execution of them. This is absolutely top-drawer artisanal work, using real precious metals and antique methods, not mass produced.
These coins are made one at a time, by me personally, in my one-man studio here in Arkansas in the central United States, using the same methods as they might have done hundreds of years ago. The pure silver blanks are made by melting down commercial .999 fine silver bullion of whatever form and pouring into a billet mold, typically about 50 ounces at a time. That bar is then rolled out using a large powered rolling mill to an appropriate thickness, stopping at least three times during the process to anneal the silver at 1000 degrees F to prevent cracking from cold-work. The blanks are then punched using an antique manual screw press and custom punching dies. Blanks are then annealed one final time and tumbled with fine polishing media to thoroughly clean and deburr them before striking. I always leave the sheet just a bit thick so that the weight of the blanks will be AT LEAST a full one tenth troy ounce (3.1 grams). There is some variation of course, in random weighings they are usually 3.2 to 3.3 grams.
The steel dies are the key tool in any coining effort and these are no exception. The dies for this coin were punched, not engraved, in the traditional manner of 9th & 10th century Northern European coins. The obverse features a rendition and inscription of Torrhen Stark, ancestor of Eddard Stark and the last king of the independant North Kingdom before Aegon's Conquest. Torrhen is sometimes known as "The King who Bent the Knee" since he was the first to declare allegiance to the new king (Aegon I). The reverse side has a facing wolf's head and the inscription WINTERFELL. The style of the work is relatively crude, but authentic for the time period being emulated.
These coins were hand-centered and struck one at a time using an antique Waterbury Farrell knuckle-press using about 75 tons of striking force. The result is a gorgeous and near-proof strike in pure silver... an astonishing piece in its own right, and one that helps us create a sense-of-place in the mythical world of Westeros.
