Bird On Fire Rises from Its Ashes!
In Greek mythology, a phoenix or phenix is a long-lived bird that is cyclically regenerated or reborn. Associated with the sun, a phoenix obtains new life by arising from the ashes of its predecessor. The phoenix was subsequently adopted as a symbol in Early Christianity due to its resurrection motif.
TheMythical Creature of Chinese art known in English as the phoenix is referred to as the “king of birds” or “epitome of birds” in Chinese tradition. This exceptional creature, associated with royalty (especially Empresses) bears the highest rank among birds. Its physical form, as presented in Chinese art, is traditionally understood to be a composite of various birds. It has the head of a pheasant, the body of a duck, the legs of a crane, the wings of a swallow, the bill of a parrot, and the tail of a peacock. As a symbol, this magnificent creature represents beauty andgood fortune. Because it is said to appear only in times of peace, the phoenix is also strongly associated with the notion of peace.
Associated with the element of fire and the direction south, the phoenix is one of the oldest animals portrayed in Chinese art and is found on decorative objects dating back thousands of years. The phoenix is considered one of the “supernatural spirits,” along with the dragon, tortoise, and unicorn, and is often paired in visual images with thedragon, which is “yin” to the phoenix’s “yang” nature - part of the common motif of paired opposites in Chinese visual tradition.
The Chinese character for phoenix, feng, is often used for the naming of people and objects whose namers wish to bestow upon them charm, balance, and peace, such as musical instruments and certain foods. It is also a popular character for the naming of girls. The Phoenix Proof Silver Dollar is the third in the new and excitingMythical Creatures Series, to be released by the Perth Mint. Coins commemorating the following legendary animals are planned:

About the Artist
The creator of the original artwork for both the coins and the colorful, outer boxes for the both the first and second Bush Babies Series is Elise Martinson. Elise is an Australian artist, graphic designer, and illustrator who loves animals (as you can see from her photo!). After studying multimedia design for four years and then working for year and a half as a graphic designer, she became eager to follow her dreams of creating 3D art for games or movies. Realizing that the limiting factor to 2D and 3D artwork was not software knowledge, but rather the ability to create concepts and accurately render them, she is now dedicated to further cultivating her drawing ability. Elise currently designs both coins and graphic artwork for the Perth Mint, and still hopes to break into the games industry one day as a concept or production artist. In addition to he much-lauded and extremely popular Bush Babies Series, several of her better-known projects for the Mint are the Outer Space Dollars 9-Coin Set, the Backyard Bugs Dollars 9-Coin Set, and the 2009 Celebrate Australia Series of $1 Coins. Elise was formerly a resident of Melbourne, Victoria but now resides in Perth, Western Australia. Here are links for Elise Martinson's online blog and her professional website.

The Island Nation of Tuvalu
Tuvalu, formerly known as the Ellice Islands, is a Polynesian island nation located in the Pacific Ocean midway between Hawaii and Australia. Its nearest neighbors are Kiribati, Samoa and Fiji. It is comprised of four reef islands and five true atolls. Its population of 11,992 makes it the third-least populated independent country in the world, with only Vatican City and Nauru having fewer inhabitants. It is also the second-smallest member by population of the United Nations. In terms of physical land size, at just 10 square miles Tuvalu is the fourth smallest country in the world, larger only than the Vatican City, Monaco and Nauru.
The first inhabitants of Tuvalu were Polynesian people, who arrived about 3000 years go. The islands came under Great Britain's sphere of influence in the late 19th century. The Ellice Islands were administered by Britain as part of a protectorate from 1892 to 1916 and as part of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands Colony from 1916 to 1974. In 1974 the Ellice Islanders voted for separate British dependency status as Tuvalu, separating from the Gilbert Islands which became Kiribati upon independence. Tuvalu became fully independent within The Commonwealth in 1978. with Queen Elizabeth II as titular head of state.
Because Tuvalu has few natural resources it has been dependent in recent years upon aid from larger, more developed nations, including Australia, New Zealand and the United States. The Perth Mint of Australia is officially commissioned by the government of Tuvalu to produce legal tender coinage for the island nation.
