WAIST BELT PLATE, REGULATION 1874 PATTERN, ARMY, CA 1874-1885 In Michael J. O’Donnell & J. Duncan Campbell book titled AMERICAN MILITARY BELT PLATES the follow is noted on page 542 regarding the design I believe of this buckles offered for sale. Plate 914 - Cast Brass with applied tongue and belt loop bar. Remarks: Long neck eagle with six-pointed stars closely resembles 1874 pattern drawing (above), and may have been modeled after General Grant’s 1851 eagle-wreath plate, shown earlier. Likely an enlisted contract plate, it lacks the fine detail and plating expected of an officers device. The brass Waist Belt Plate weight is 2.67 ounces. Its dimensions in the book are 54 x 76 mm or converted to inches is 2 1/8 by 2 63/64 inches or approximately 3 inches in length. This is the measurement of this belt plate. This belt plate could have very well been an officers belt plate due to a very small portion of a beautiful brass coating remaining on the top of the buckle left hand side for about a half an inch in length. The rest of the coating has worn off as photo shows.
