Here is a very nice example of a bayonet made for one of the first United States military contracts just following the Revolutionary War. Made after the French pattern used in the Revolution, this bayonet is similar to the one illustrated in Robert M. Reilly\'s reference book \"American Socket Bayonets and Scabbards\", FIG. B-40B, but without the U.S. marking. It does have what might be an M marking on the ricasso and a J on the socket. The M may be stamped over another marking, possibly US. Blade is 15 1/4\", socket muzzle to tip. Socket length is 2 3/4\", OAL 18 1/4\". The socket has a small bridge. The patina on this is really nice and appears to be never cleaned, or over-cleaned to make it \"shiney\". There is a 6 1/8\" face flute starting about 1/2\" from the tip. Let me know if you have any other questions.Check my other sales for additional colonial period bayonets.
