In my travels around the Los Angeles area to find Interesting, Unusual or Antique items to add to my Shop, I come across some really special pieces.
This Handsome U.S.S. Carronade IFS 1 Ashtray is one of those great finds.
It is about a 7 1/8” Square, Shiny White Porcelain Ashtray and marked on the reverse by its maker, Masuda Yokahama.
I don’t know how old it is, but I have learned that the ship was first commissioned in 1955 as an Inshore Fire Support Ship (IFS) and stricken from the Naval Registry in 1973. Sadly, it was sold for scrap in 1974.
It is quite a striking Ashtray featuring the Insignia in Black and Gold.
With the exception of a little rub/off of some of the Gold, it is in great condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. It doesn’t seem to have been used or used much. Most likely it was kept as a display item.
How nice it would be if the person purchasing this would be someone who actually served on this ship!
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. Thanks for Looking and Good Luck!
Shortly after I listed this item, I received a lovely note from one of the men who did serve aboard this ship. The guys are trying to re-connect with one another and I thought I'd do my small part towards that effort by posting his note here. Good Luck to you all!
Dear pursenurse,Hi... I have some other memorabilia from the ship. I was aboard her from Dec '65 to Aug '67 and while we were homeported in Yokosuka, japan I made five combat cruises to Vietnam. I would love to buy the ashtray, but $45 minimum is just a bit out of it for me... I do admire it though and if anyone else mentions that they were aboard, pls ask them to go to "usscarronadeifs1.com" . I have a webpage on the ship and have been able to connect with over 60 of the different crewmen aboard, a number of whom have passed on.Good luck in your sale...Bernard Howlett GMGSN
