UNCLE SHELBY is the oldest living person I know personally. He hates most new things, but has been fascinated for months that I sell stamps "to the whole world" on the Internet. Every week he comes, driving his 1953 Oldsmobile '98 (two-tone, green and white) that looks like it came off the showroom floor. In February, 2000 he tells me the following: in November and December of 1999 he calls 3 of the largest stamp firms in the world to look at his stamp accumulation started in November, 1929 and stopped in November, 1947. He says FDR and James Farley had ruined stamp collecting with the "crap of that last decade". The firms each offer him what I think sounds like the California lottery winning. He turns 'em down cold as "Fast-talking, smooth tongues". He says to me: "Give me a few thousand old glassines to fill, I'll give you a commission to put a picture on that computer thing and sell every glassine for whatever they git. Jist make sure you give 'em pictures of everything in the glassines with none of your fancy words, I'll make sure each glassine has some real good stamps from the only good time of stamps." He says he'll come every week and read the things people say and he'll continue his offerings as long as people are liking his old stamps.
After 8+ years, by April of 2008, he's given me over 43,000 glassines with more coming each week. All are USA and possessions from the first 100 years of stamps! Most 19th century. I must say, condition varies from "spectacular" to "not so good", but I can't imagine many disappointments.
June 30, 2011 UPDATE! UNCLE SHELBY HAS NOW DELIVERED
OVER 58,400 GLASSINES TO DATE WITH STILL MORE TO COME!
Any item or lot described with faults is not returnable because of faults. Lots with 10 or more items are not returnable for any reason. Requests for expertising extensions must be approved prior to placing your offer so the sale can be held open if the consignor agrees. Please allow sufficient time for the approval process, especially if a weekend is involved, since we are seldom available on Friday-Sunday.
Given repeated abuses by non-paying buyers with few or zero positive responses, we now require all buyers to have at least 10 positive responses from at least 3 different vendors. Exceptions are made only with prior approval. California residents must pay 8.50% sales tax. Thank you.
Now let the parade of Uncle Shelby's stamps continue! His lots have been numbered 1, 2, 3, etc... consecutively until he runs out!
For the foreseeable future, Uncle Shelby lots will be listed on Thursday and Sunday nights.
