It\'smy great pleasure to offer for your consideration a truly rare andhighly collectible exemplar of the outstanding creativity of designand workmanship produced by Unger Bros.

Thisall original watch fob features a superbly done double-sided portraitof the Indian Chief, one of Unger\'s most desirable and sought-afterpatterns.

Theoriginal sales catalog produced by Unger Bros. titled this pattern“Indian.” It features Sitting Bull, Chief of the Sioux nation,in full feathered headdress. Chief Sitting Bull is known for hisvictory in 1876 over Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer at the LittleBighorn, which has come to be known as Custer\'s Last Stand and wasthe iconic final battle between the U.S. government and the Indiannations.

Thedesign by Unger Bros. was inspired by the 1885 portrait of SittingBull as he appeared on a giant full-color poster for Buffalo Bill\'sWild West Show. The likeness is true to life and not romanticized,since there are actual photographs existing of Sitting Bullduring that time.

Althoughthere was tremendous anger and disbelief throughout the country rightafter the slaughter at Little Bighorn, in time feelings turned toadmiration and respect for Sitting Bull and he was considered a greatwarrior by the audiences that came to see him perform at the WildWest Shows.

Thisappealed greatly to the designers at Unger Bros., (head artisticdirector, Philemon Olin Dickerson who was the brother of EmmaDickerson the wife of Eugene Unger, as well as the other 2 maindesigners, Otto Leigh and Edward P. Beach), who often took theirinspiration from Greco-Roman and other historical, literary andmythical figures and creatures of their own vivid imaginations.

Theywere so enamored of the saga of Sitting Bull that they immortalizedhim in their sterling creations, including liquor flasks anddecanters, toiletry sets, etc.

However,in over 40 years of collecting Unger Bros., I have never come acrossa double-sided watch fob in this pattern, nor is one being offeredanywhere on the web at this time and, to the best of my internetresearch, I can find no record of one ever having been photographedor included in a Google search.

Thewatch fob is done in repoussé and is highly detailed. Overall, thecondition is very good. Most of the details are sharp and crisp, butthe raised areas such as the nose and chin have a slight loss ofdefinition due to age and wear. I would call it a soft smoothing orrubbing rather than a full-on flattening. When looking at the features from the side, the nose is still 3-dimensional.

I have pictured both sides, andyou can see that one side also has a slight ding on the nose (Pics 2, 3, 11).

Also,the designs on the decorative discs on the head band are mostly wornaway.

Theseissues are magnified by the enlarged images, but with a special piecelike this, it\'s important to mention them.

Theentire fob is all original, including the strap chain and hookclasp.

UngerBros.\' markings of “Sterling 925/1000 Fine” and their logo arestamped into the side of the disc (see image 8), and“Sterling” is stamped on the interior of the clasp, but it wasimpossible to photograph.
