Overview: A beautiful, fully serviced (135 grams) 1808 pair cased unique automaton, solid silver pocket verge fusee by George Graham of London; the case is fully hall-marked for 925 fine sterling silver, London 1808, with specialist case maker TG Thomas Gibbard marks
The unique original porcelain dial depicting a castle by the sea with a galleon and at the base of the castle a fabulous "Castle Guard" rotating automaton
This watch is a spectacular rare example, the superb premium movement the best near mint verge example I have ever seen, it is running like new, as it indeed looks, and takes a full wind by the key and runs till down over a 24 hour period. It is a key wound movement and also set by the key which is included. Recently fully serviced. The matching cases are beautiful antique examples dated 1808; the outer pair case has some marks and light losses and the inner case has some pitting, but does nothing to detract from the wonderful presence of this unique example
Please read on, the movement and case details are listed below
The Movement: Is engraved "George Graham London" number 4002 a premium example with a stunning engraved plate, key wound movement (key included). It is in near mint, spectacular condition. With a gilt full plate, pierced and engraved balance cock, three arm flat steel balance wheel, turned cylindrical pillars and engraved main plate with silver disc regulator. This premium movement will offer excellent "Verge" time keeping, currently running as new with a wonderful rich tick.
The movement is of the lift out style
The Fine Silver Cases: Are solid silver pair cases with TG original Thomas Gibbard specialist casemaker marks and have wear but are still magnificient examples. The stem and bow ring are firm, the case button is still present and works correctly. The cases all open and close perfectly, the hinged inner lift out movement mechanism is also in excellent condition
Case Condition: The watch cases have some wear but are all sound and solid with crisp clear hallmarks. The outer pair case is missing the pendant lip on the back cover and there is a slight split near the case button and one to the side, neither affect the function or solidity of the case. The inner case has some edge pitting and the stem has a light crack near the base which is still solid and firm. All the hinges are strong and functioning correctly
The Dial: Is a stunning rare example with some harlines and marks around the edges as shown, the centre section in beautiful condition. The original handpainted montage depicting a castle guarding a river or sea port with a galleon sailing past. At the base of a dial is a fully functioning rotating automaton which shows castle guards marching past on duty, visible through the recessed doorway on an independant dial. The time is depicted by elegant numerals. The original hands are in excellent condition
The Glass: The original bullseye glass is in very good condition
Dimensions: The watch is a very large example, measuring over 2.5 inches excluding the bow and over 1 inch in depth. The watch including the movement weighs a magnificient 135 grams
The movement marked Geo Graham of London reflects exceptional quality and is a premium example. George Graham was one of the most illustrious British Watchmakers. The case is dated 1808 which is later than Graham and as such the movement may be recased or refer to another George Graham. It is without doubt an exceptional mastercrafted verge and worthy of more research
