Unique Solid Silver Miniature Boxed Cruet Set Hallmark Birmingham 1942 -so Rare:
VINTAGE MINIATURE SOLID SILVER CRUET FOUR PIECE MATCHING SET IN ORIGINAL PRESENTATION BOX HALLMARKED BIRMINGHAM 1942 – ONE MUSTARD POT, ONE SALT AND PEPPER CELLAR AND ONE SPOON – EXTREMELY RARE!
An absolutely delightful miniature, solid silver, cruet set, consisting of four pieces in their original box. This exceptionally rare set was crafted during the early 1940s, at the height of the Second World War, in Birmingham, England.
This is a beautiful and eye-catching miniature set with a simple, elegant design. The pots all have a lovely, wide-ribbed body and the mustard pot has a sweet, little triangular pointed finial on the top.
HISTORY: This unusual little set was all crafted by Lanson Ltd of Birmingham, at the height of the Second World War, in the early 1940s.
The hallmarks for all the pieces are matching and clear. There are further hallmarks on the lids of the mustard pot and salt cellar and pepper pot, in addition to the main hallmarks on the bottom of each piece, to show that they are matching and all made by the same maker, in the same year. The spoon has one set of hallmarks by the same maker but in the previous year.
The hallmarks are: on the bodies of all pieces the letters L.Ltd for Lanson Ltd of Birmingham; followed by the Anchor to show that the silver was assayed in Birmingham; the lion passant denoting solid English silver; the letter “S” in a shield for the year 1942 on the mustard and saltcellar and pepper pot and “R” for 1941 on the spoon.
On the lids of the mustard and salt cellarand pepper pot, the lion passant, followed by the letter “S” to show that the bodies and lids are matched.
MEASUREMENTS: Mustard Height (including top finial) – 4.5cm (1.7 inches)
The salt cellar and pepper Height – 4cm (1.5 inches)
Length - 7cm (2.7 inches)
Mustard pot – 12g; Salt cellar – 4g; Pepperpot – 4g; Spoon – 4g. Total weight of all the silver pieces is 24g.
The whole set is in excellent condition for its age and has clearly been well-kept, in its box. There are the usual, very light, surface marks that are common to silver, as it is a soft metal, and the set would benefit from cleaning.
The mustard pot has a little ding on one of the ribs and on the top – both should easily be pushed out. The original blue liner is in mint condition. There a few tiny little surface bruises on the salt cellar. The pepper pot has a few little dings around its rim. The spoon is in mint condition. All these should be easily remedied.
The satin and velvet-lined box is in fantastic condition internally, with the linings completely intact. Externally, it is also in great condition, just with signs of wear commensurate with age.
As usual, we have gone into great detail about the condition as we want you to know exactly what you are getting. But these really are ‘nit-picking’ details – it is fabulous!
There are no words to describe this set – it is so lovely, rare, unusual and just plain sweet! We have not seen another miniature cruet set like this and certainly not one in solid, English silver. Ideal for collectors of all types. The photos do not do it justice. You will love it – do not miss!
