Following the implementation of the draft in 1940, the 88th Infantry Division was created from scratch rather than from existing units, National Guard units, or Reserves. Known as the Blue Devils, they were activated 15Jul42 at Camp Gruber, OK. Following training, they arrived in Casablanca, French Morocco on 15Dec43. More training was to follow in Algeria before heading to Italy where they would remain for the rest of the war. With stops in Naples, Anzio, Rome, and into the Po Valley, the 88th is credited with participation in the Rome-Arno, North Apennines, and Po Valley campaigns. They spent 344 days in combat and were en route to Austria when the war ended. They would remain in Italy on occupation duty until September 1947.
