US Army Air Forces B-17 bombers ran a gauntlet of fire from flak and fighters in the hotly contested skies over Germany. The M-1/M-2 flak vest was developed to better protect B-17 pilots and air crews from \"ack-ack\" while in flight. It consisted of vertical steel slats inside an OD cotton shell with a white corduroy lining. This US Army AAF WW2 B-17 BOMBER M-1/M-2 FLAK VEST is in very good condition, missing the groin plate, and with some light scattered whitish soiling at front, moderate fading to the red pull tab at the lower front, moderate \"browning\" to the corduroy lining, some light whitish soiling at back, and with some light overall age wear evident (ALL pictured). Otherwise, the vest is in fine shape, with absolutely no rips, holes, tears, or other damage to the tough OD 100% cotton shell. Most interestingly, it boasts all of the original vertical steel slats inside, sports the classic white corduroy lining, and carries both of the original \"Armor, Flyers Vest\" nomenclature tags inside. It bears fully functional dual darkened brass \"lift-the-dot\" closure attachments at the shoulders, features all of the original straps and hardware throughout, and is marked with the traditional \"flaming bomb\" acceptance stamp of the Ordnance Department at the interior front and back, along with the respective weights.
