US Army WW2 MAJOR NAMED FIXED BALE M-1 STEEL HELMET W/ 1ST PATTERN HAWLEY LINER:
$599.99

The M-1 steel helmet was a revolutionary design, with a removable liner housing the suspension and sizing system. It quickly became THE iconic image of the unshaven, dogfaced GI of WW2. The earliest M-1s featured fixed chinstrap bales at each side, but these often broke under hard use, and so were replaced by more practical swivel bales in 1943. This US Army WW2 MAJOR NAMED FIXED BALE M-1 STEEL HELMET is in excellent condition, with a few dark spots at the upper front crown, some dark scratches at the upper back crown, two whitish scuffs at the back right crown, some whitish spot soiling at the top crown, some light scattered scratching and spot soiling around the exterior, and with some light overall age wear evident (most pictured). Otherwise, the helmet is in excellent shape, with absolutely no dents, cracking, or other damage to the tough steel construction, which retains approximately 90% of the original corked OD exterior finish. Most interestingly, it boasts a front seam and fixed bales, sports the original sewn khaki web chinstraps with a fully functional \"raised bar\" hook and point darkened brass closure buckle, and carries the name \"MAJ. STUTEVOSS\" and the officer\'s serial number \"O141878\" hand marked in red at the interior left crown. The helmet is stamped with the lot number \"504A\" at the underside of the front lip, and is complete with the original US WW2 Major Named 1st Pattern Hawley M-1 Liner in very good condition, with a small crack in the top front crown, some light scattered brownish spot soiling around the exterior, some brownish soiling to the interior suspension, some cracking to the right chinstrap stud, heavy drying, moderate scuffing, and some tearing to one edge of the leather portion of the front sweatband, moderate drying, twisting, and surface cracking to the right end of the chinstrap, a spot of whitish soiling at the front right chinstrap, some scattered drying and surface cracking to the rest of that chinstrap, and with some scattered age wear evident (most pictured). Otherwise, the liner is in fine shape, with no other damage to the brownish cloth covered fiber construction. Most interestingly, it boasts a fully intact rayon interior suspension, sports the original riveted brown leather chinstrap, snap-in rayon and brown leather sweatband, and khaki HBT nape strap, and carries the name \"Maj. Stutevoss\" hand marked in matching red at the interior right ear, along with \"MAJ. STUTEVOSS / O141878\" hand marked in black on the leather portion of the front sweatband. Major James Frederick Stutevoss was born in Nebraska in 1893, and served in the US Army in both WW1 and WW2. He spent three years as a Private then a Corporal in the Washington National Guard from 1914-1917, rose to the rank of US Army Major during the inter-war period, and was called to active duty from Portland, Oregon on February 20, 1942.
