U.s. C60 With Uss Noa February 20, 1962 Postmark, Cacheted, Unaddressed For Sale
ITEM DESCRIPTION: U.S. 1193 tied by “U.S.S. Noa (DD-841), Feb. 20, 1962” to unaddressed cacheted cover., Absolutely genuine, ex- Roberts Collection. A similar cover sold for $60.00 in a 2006 Regency-Superior sale. Project Mercury was the United States’ first orbital space flight made by Lt. Col John Glenn. The space capsule was recovered by the U.S.S. Noa and Lt. Col. Glenn was then flown by helicopter to the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Randolph. It has been established that the postal clerk on the U.S.S. Noa processed 1,500 covers, of which 300 were backdated. Other backdated covers were produced with the same postmark featuring U.S. 1193, the Project Mercury commemorative stamp Backdated 1193 covers generally realize $50 while those with other stamps realize $50 to $125.00. Covers with PM in the date stamp have realized prices as high as $550.00.
