THIS IS THE EARLY PATTERN OAT HORSE FEEDBAG ISSUE TO US CAVALRY TROOPER DURING THE LATE INDIAN WAR AND SPANISH AMERICAN WAR. THIS FEEDBAG IS SMALLER THAN THE WORLD WAR I ERA RELATIVELY COMMON BAG FOUND TODAY.

THIS BAG WAS ISSUED AND IS DIRTY FROM FIELD USE. THE LEATHER IS DRY BUT NOT FRAGILE TO HANDLE. THE CANVAS WAS TORN AND REPAIRED DURING THE PERIOD OF USE AS CAN BE SEEN IN MY PICTURES. NICE FIELD REPAIR THAT JUST ADDS CHARACTER TO THIS ALREADY SALTY FEEDBAG.

THE LEATHER BILLET IS CLEARLY STAMPED "ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL 1903".

THE BODY OF THE BAG IS MARKED WITH THE COMMON "US" AND BELOW "A 3 57" FOR THE 3rd CAVALRY, A TROOP AND 57th TROOPER.
