The Forest Service used these
nails to designate which trees were supposed to be cut for ties. The Forest Servicewould drive a nail into the tree and
when the tree was cut, the tie hacker was to take the nail out of the tree and
put it in the stump. They were only used
for a couple years, because it didn’t take long for the hackers to realize they
could pull the nail from a designated tree and put it in the stump of a more
select tree that they preferred to cut.Forest Service nails have been found in Wyoming, Colorado & Montana.
This is a diamond head on diamond shank 2 inch nail. Nail is in very good condition with no noticable pitting on the head or shank. It will display very well, but, as always, you be the judge. Great conversation piece for the modeler's train room or an unusual nail for the hard core nail collector.
