US Marshals Service Adam Walsh Task Force Colorado USMS SOIB Challenge Coin #245:
$9.99
This rare, limited edition Challenge Coin commemorates the dedicated and courageous service of the local, state, and federal law enforcement officers assigned to the United States Marshals Service (USMS) Adam Walsh Task Force in the District of Colorado.
The U.S. Marshals Service is a federal law enforcement agency within the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), and is the oldest American federal law enforcement agency through its creation by the Judiciary Act of 1789. The USMS is part of the executive branch of government, and is the enforcement arm of the U.S. federal courts. The Marshals Service is the primary agency for fugitive operations, responsible for transport of federal prisoners, the protection of federal judges and officers of the court, and for the effective operation of the judiciary. The Marshals Service operates the Witness Protection Program, and serves federal level arrest warrants.
The USMS Sex Offender Investigations Branch (SOIB) was created following the passage of the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act (AWA) in July 2006. The Adam Walsh Act names the U.S. Marshals Service as the primary federal agency to assist state and local law enforcement agencies with tracking and arresting non-compliant sex offenders nationwide. The Adam Walsh Act also provides a statute for Deputy U.S. Marshals (DUSM) to prosecute sex offenders federally for failing to register as a sex offender. The mission of the SOIB is to ensure the safety of communities and children across the country, and implement an aggressive enforcement strategy against non-compliant sex offenders that travel across state line and fail to register.
The US Marshals Adam Walsh Task Force in Colorado assists agencies throughout the state with sex offender compliance checks, sex offender warrant operations, and investigates sex offenders who cross state lines without complying with sex offender registration laws. Suspected violations are forwarded to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for federal prosecution in violation of the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act.
The Adam Walsh Act was signed on the 25th anniversary of the abduction of 6-year old Adam Walsh from a shopping mall in Florida. Adam Walsh was found murdered 16 days after his abduction in 1981, and the perpetrator was not named until December 16, 2008, when the Hollywood, Florida police department announced that they had evidence that Ottis Toole was the killer. Adam Walsh\'s father is John Walsh, host of the television series America\'s Most Wanted. John Walsh, also founder of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), was joined by other children\'s advocates to mount an aggressive campaign to get the bill passed into law.
