Thomas Hart Benton (1782-1858), United States Senator from Missouri (1821-1851), influential politician during America's impending crisis, Autograph Letter Signed while in office,1 page, 10 x 8, 20 June 1836, Benton writes to William Burke, the Postmaster of Cincinnati, Ohio concerning matters involving the Post Office, in full:
"Dear Sir,
Yours of the 13th. arrived this morning, and it gives me pleasure to inform you that I had, from the first, taken the same view of this petty affair of the boxes, which you present, and that I shall to continue to oppose the scheme to interfere with them in any way by the government. To dispense with fractions of a cent is also highly desirable in such numerous & minute accounts as the post offices present.
