Usaf Us 5th 13th Atc Air Force Officer Enlisted Ike Jacket Cap Hat Pilot Wings For Sale
USAF US AIR FORCE 5th AIR FORCE 13th AIR FORCE ATC AIR TRANSPORT COMMAND OFFICER ENLISTED BLUE IKE JACKET WITH OVERSEAS CAP HAT BULLION PILOT WINGS CUSTOM SEWN RIBBONS AND BULLION INSIGNIA
For sale is one of the most beautiful uniforms I have had in my collection for years. However, I have never found an identification to go with the uniform and have decided to sale the uniform on . The sale is for the Ike jacket and the overseas cap. The shirt, tie, trousers and mannequin are not part of the sale and are for display purposes only. The blue Ike jacket is an officer grade garment made by Squadron Leader and is so indicated by the tailor label found inside. Its unfortunate that someone seems to have blocked-out a name on the tailor label. Only a letter or two are barely readable. Looking at the overall quality of the uniform, and the fact there are bullion embroidered pilots wings, indicates an officer level person. However, the uniform displays MSgt master sergeant chevrons. After doing research, I came up with two explanations for such a uniform. During World War II there were enlisted pilots. I believe, and I could be wrong, these pilots were in non-combatant flying. As indicated by the patches and the Air Transport Command distinguished unit insignia, the person was probably transporting aircraft. After WWII these persons retained their flying status and some transferred into the US air Force during the separation of the services in 1947. The other explanation is that the person was an officer during World War II and after the war, in relation to post war downsizing, retained the rank of master sergeant and transferred into the US Air Force in 1947 and in later years probably regained his commission. There may be other explanations and I would be more than happy to add such explanations to the listing. The command pilot wings are first design bullion embroidered. Some early embroidered actually used a silver content bullion thread. The silver bullion thread on these wings have a silver patina because of the silver content in the thread. Later dated aluminum bullion thread does not patina. The enlisted collar insignia and overseas stripes also seem to have a patina. Another point of interest about the uniform are the large US Navy size ribbons which are custom made and sewn to the uniform. All three Air Transport Command insignia are sterling silver and are marked as being made by LeVelle and Company of Washington, DC. An outstanding Ike jacket with bullion pilot wings, bullion enlisted insignia on the collars, six bullion overseas stripes, custom US Navy size sewn ribbon rack, 5th Air Force patch, 13th Air Force patch and two sterling ATC insignia. In addition, the overseas cap is regulation issued, size 7 and is dated as design of 2 April 1951. The cap has a third ATC insignia marked as the other two. Since the uniform was custom tailored by Squadron Leader there are no size markings. The approximate measurements are: from arm-pit seam to the other 21 inches; from the top shoulder seam to the other 17 inches; from the top shoulder seam to the end of the sleeve 24 inches; and from the top of the jacket collar to the end of the jacket 22.5 inches. The overall condition of the jacket and cap is very good for its age and I can find no nips or other significant problems. Would make an excellent addition to your collection! Please see all the photos and if you have any questions please email. Thank you!
