Usmc Ace John Bolt Grouping ~ Includes 2 Flight Jackets, Flight Suit & More For Sale

This John F. Bolt Grouping is from a collection purchased by a friend of mine and I am listing it for him. All items are guaranteed original and formerly owned by the USMC Double Ace John F. Bolt.

This is a fairly large lot of items attained over the last nine years since the death of Colonel Bolt. I believe a few of the items were obtained from Rock Island sale Co. & some from a collector in Texas. Lot consists of two G-1 flight jackets with Bolt nametags a flight suit with nametag & VMF-214 patch, a VMF-214 Ace's blanket, a large VMF-214 squadron patch, US Naval Aviators pinback wing, USMC Captains rank insignia (shirt or hat size), small EGA collar insignia and two photos of Colonel Bolt (see photos). Both G-1 jackets are of excellent quality leather and have NO rips, tears or losses anywhere to their exteriors (see photos). Both remain intact overall and shows light/average use commensurate with their age (see photos). Waistband and cuffs appear original to each of the jackets and are solid overall (see photos). Fur style collars are complete/intact with no dry rot but have some small wear losses (see photos). Reverse of the jacket with the Major's nametag has the typical white painted USN stencil to the collar reverse (see photos). Zipper runs are both original small tooth Conmars (see photos). There are some smaller perforations stamped to the inner lapel of the jacket with the major's rank but the later jacket has standard USN perforations to the inner lapel (see photos). No patches have ever been sewn to either jacket. Earlier G-1 has a Major John Bolt leather nametag sewn to the left chest area and the later G-1 has a Lt. Colonel John Bolt leather nametag sewn inside to the collar area (see photos).

Linings to both jackets are clean/solid overall and without problem. Nomenclature label present to the Major Bolt jacket indicates manufacture by L.W. Foster Sportswear (see photos). Size is indicated as 38 but jacket fits the mannequin as a size 36. Interior slash pocket is present with a working snap. The Lt. Colonel Bolt G-1 has the label area obscured by the Bolt nametag and I am unsure if a nomenclature label is present (see photos). Both jackets appear to be the same size.

Measurements for the Major Bolt jacket are: shoulder seam to shoulder seam across the back – 18 inches, shoulder seam to the end of the cuff material – 24 inches, base seam of collar to bottom of waistband material - 25 inches. Armpit to armpit across the front - 22.5 inches (expanded). The Lt. Colonel Bolt jacket's measurements are the same.

The Bolt flight suit is the bright orange style with a main zipper front and pockets to the chest & legs (see photos). There are no rips tears or losses to the suit and all zippers are working. Flight suit label present to the collar area shows manufacture by Lion Uniform, Inc. and size is shown as 38 (see photos). The name Bolt has been inked below the inner label and there is a leather snap on Lt. Colonel Bolt nametag to the left front chest area (see photos). To the right upper arm is sewn a shoulder size VMF-214 patch (see photos).

The Bolt USMC VMF-214 Ace's blanket is wool and of multi-piece construction (see photos) The stars, black sheep and letters are all individually sewn on as is the black border (see photos). The blanket measures approximately 60 x 69 inches.

The larger VMF-214 squadron patch is heavy embroidery on wool and is mounted on a brown leather backing. It is definitely post WWII (see photos).

US Naval aviators wing is an early pinback style with barrel catch marked sterling to the reverse along the top edge (see photos). Rank insignia and EGA are likewise pinback and the rank insignia is marked sterling (see photos).

The two 8.5 x 11 black & white photos are copies of period photos and are included with the lot.

This is a super rare grouping of items attributed to Lt. Colonel Bolt who was the USMC's only jet fighter Ace. Both G-1's are excellent overall and the flight suit is excellent as well. AThe Ace's blanket is the only one of its type I have ever seen and it is clearly a unique piece. Great opportunity for the USMC aviation collector to add a centerpiece display to his collection. All items are guaranteed to be original period pieces as described.
