Shenandoah on 10 October 1 923, it became the first aircraft to serve as a commissioned vessel in the United States Navy. Five weeks earlier, on its maiden flight, the ZR-1 became the world's first rigid airship to fly with helium, rather than the more conventional, and more inflammable, hydrogen.
