About this Item:
Ulysses S. Grant (April 27, 1822 - July 23, 1885) 18th President of the United States and Union Army commanding general in the American Civil War, authentic, original autographed war-date handwritten letter (ALS), dated September 17, 1861.
Under Grant, the Union military defeated the Confederacy, ending the War and the secession of the Southern states with the surrender of Robert E. Lee's army at Appomattox. Grant's presidency was notable for the role it had in stabilizing the nation during the turbulent Reconstruction period following the War.
The letter is written "To Col. L.F. Ross, Comdg. Fort Jefferson" and reads, in full:“Your orders meet with my entire approval. I hope you will see them enforced.”
On September 13, 1861, Brig. Gen. U.S. Grant issued Special Orders to Brig. Gen. John A. McClernand, “The Troops now at Fort Holt Ky … the detachment of artillery and Capt. Delano’s company of Cavalry will march tomorrow and take position at Fort Jefferson Ky. Colonel Ross will select the position for the camp establish guards and make all needful regulations for the new camp…” The camp was named Camp Crittenden.
The letter measures approximately 7" x 7.5" in size andhas been signed“U.S. Grant / Brig. Gen Com,” at the conclusion. The signed letter is in fine condition.
