Rareolder Figural Betel Lime Double Figures Mortar Carving with 2 Ramu effigies oneach side seen on all pictures.

Thispiece was entirely hand carved out of local wood, is in great shape, as westored it for years before opening our store.

Thisis a wonderful betel nut mortar which shows typical lower characteristics:squarely positioned head set low on the chest, slanted eyes and a long noselikely to represent a mythological figure. Betel pounders or mortars are usedby toothless people for mashing up the ingredients of the quid.

Thecultures and art styles of the have strong links to those of both

andsouthwestern , especially in architecture and carving, which was made in largequantities. The main theme, the human figure, was expressed in blocky, almostcubist forms, with the nearly rectangular head sunk deeply between theshoulders. Large freestanding examples of such figures can be found in bothstanding and kneeling positions.

In the people with poorteeth crush the betel nut in a mortar. In the lime containers used as well asthe mortar (lime is used with betel to cause a chemical reaction) are made fromgourds, carry burnt-in designs and have finely woven stoppers with curved boars\'tusks. The mortars and pestles, and the handles of the lime spatulas inparticular, are superbly carved with a great variety of human figures, animals, plants and artifacts, portraying much of importance in the Massim culture. Wehave a collection of those too.

The Betelnut also calledPugua or Mama\'on by Guamanians are \'palm nuts\' from the areca tree. Thescientific name for the tree is \'Areca catechu\' and resembles a thin coconutpalm tree. These hard nuts are chewed casually like chewing gum by islandersand is a permanent feature of the cultures of the Pacific. Nut chewing isdefinitely an acquired habit more commonly passed down from grandparents(called guelo) to grandchildren.
