Unusual Charles Horner Sterling Silver Star Pattern Thimble, Chester 1892 For Sale
Unusual Charles Horner Sterling Silver
Star Pattern Thimble, Chester 1892
SEE ADDITIONAL PICTURES BELOW
This is a Charles Horner design I had not seen on a sterling silver thimble until recently. The body has the star pattern design (star-shaped depressions surrounded by tiny dots) which is more commonly found on some early Dorcas thimbles introduced ca. 1890. Hallmarked in the border: 8 (the size), C·H (for Charles Horner), the lion passant for sterling silver, the Chester (town shield) Assay Office mark and the date letter uppercase "I" for 1892. The date letter is a bit rubbed but most probably "I". In excellent condition - in round with no holes, dents, damage or repairs. Height approx. 2.4 cm; diameter approx. 1.5 cm; weight 5.3 grams.
The star pattern Dorcas thimble also has a hammered or faceted rim but this sterling version has a plain border. Below I show a comparison between this sterling example and the Dorcas version (The star pattern Dorcas is, of course not included in this sale.)
