Very Fine Butterfield Type Pocket Sundial With Compass By Cadot Á Paris - 1737

This is a lovely brass pocket sundial with compass, with a finely engraved traditional “Bird” Gnomon and dated in the engraving 1737, by Cadot á Paris, a much respected instrument maker.

The face of the sundial is engraved with 2 tracks of Roman numerals and 2 tracks of Arabic numerals with numbers at the end of the tracks indicating latitudes.

The reverse is engraved with the names of 18 cities and their respective latitudes. There is also a well engraved spring lock for the gnomon.

The eight pointed compass under the domed glass indicates North.

This has not been cleaned or restored.
