Very Fine+ Vintage Halloween Broomed Witch Diecut Decoration, Germany, 1920s:
Welcome Fellow Vintage and Antique
Hallowe'en and Paper Ephemera Enthusiasts!
Many of you know us as longtime collectors and sellers of vintage and
antique Hallowe'en, Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Easter memorabilia, antique
dolls, old toys, and lovely old china and glassware.
For your all-year-long Hallowe’en-loving pleasure, we are HAUNTINGly happy to present a MAGICally magnificent vintage Hallowe'en broomed witch diecut that was made in Germany in the 1920s. This lovely lady is in VERY FINE + to NEAR MINT condition!
Please meet Maxine! She has outstanding color and she was made from thick, heavily-embossed cardboard or pressed paper pulp and painted in superb shades of old very-dark brownish orange (love, love,LOVE this color!), black, ivory white, and metallicGHOULISH green paintwas used to accent her eye.
Notice that Maxine is an elderly witch since she has white hair. Interesting to note: when metallic paints were used to accent these great old decorations it is usually the first area to show wear. We are HAUNTINGly happy to report that Maxine’s green eye paint has NO wear whatsoever!
Maxine wears a dress that has FRIGHTfully fabulous embossed tiny stars. Germany is embossed on her dress as well. She has chosen her favorite mode of transportation – her broom – to fly on All Hallows' Eve as she has done for 90-Something years. Her German manufacturers, whose designers were so talented at their craft, even gave Maxine tiny embossed laces to her iconic black boots.
One just like her can be seen on page 165 of Mark B. Ledenbach’s outstanding book “Vintage Halloween Collectibles; An Identification & Price Guide (Second Edition)”. She measures 7 3/4” high x 4” wide.
German diecuts such as this one were made with both matte and glossy finishes. Maxine has a matte finish to her orange and creamy white but the black of her dress, broom, boots and pointed witch’s hat has a slight sheen. This is, without question, one of the best examples of this diecut we have seen for two reasons: Maxine shows very little wear and she has great patina. She even has her original price on the back that indicates she originally sold for a whopping 5 cents at one of those great 5 &10cent stores many of usremember so well from our childhoods!!!
Her exact condition is as follows: at the very tip of one point of her white
hair there is a slight bend. There is a small separation at the meeting point
where her hat meets her hair. There areNO major bends or creases to this
diecut whatsoever. There is a tiny bit of paint wear and a light surface paint
scratch at her broom.
We have had the pleasure of sharing a few of these diecuts and so often there is a crease at the base of the broom but this isNOT the case with Maxine! The original hole that was placed at the top for hanging showsNO wear. Where her original price was written there is a little discoloration in that area and thisis reverse-side only.
We absolutelylove the color and condition of this decoration from the Flapper Days of the Roarin’ 1920s. We imagine that Maxinesurely decorated a party or two, perhaps at a speakeasy where bridge and mahjong were played, many cocktails were enjoyed, costumes and masks were worn and fun was had by all. This example of fine 1920s German artistry is an example ofhighly-desirable paper ephemera – with her SPOOKtacular color and condition – and she would be perfect as an addition to any vintage Hallowe'en lover’s collection!

Oh, there’ll be spooky doings
When cometh Hallowe'en,
With black cats loudly meowing,
And witches to be seen;
For ‘tis the night when bats careen,
And hoots the hooting owl,
While in the heavy shadows
The gray ghost slyly prowl.
Happy Hallowe'en 2013!
