Very Rare 1888 Bodie, Ca California Railroad Co. Letter To Virginia City, Nv For Sale
Up for sale is an extremely rare letter from the superintendent's office of the Bodie & Benton Railway & Com. Co. (located in Bodie, CA) to the general purchasing agent of the Virginia & Truckee Railroad (in Virginia City, NV) regarding payment of a bill. Letter is datelined Oct. 2nd, 1888, with a penciled in received by 10/2-/88. Measures 8" by 10 1/2".Condition: Letter has lines from where it was folded and a small brown stain at the bottom. Some of the ink looks like it smeared when the letter was written. Otherwise, very fine condition (See photos for detailed condition).Bodie collectors know how few Bodie documents have survived, besides the occasional bank check or newspaper. This letter was purchased in Virginia City and was once part of a collector's larger railroad collection. I haven't seen anything like this go up for sale. The Bodie & Benton Railway was a unique narrow-gauge railroad that operated from 1881 to 1918 to transport lumber from the Mono Mills back to Bodie. As it ran from an elevation of 8,500 feet down 32 miles to the mills near Mono Lake, it was appropriately called "The Railroad in the Sky." The line was dismantled and the iron was used for scrap metal during WW II. You can still see a small ridge without sagebrush in the landscape.Whether you collect Bodie documents, Virginia City documents, or railroad items, this letter hits them all. Do not pass up this due within 48 hours of sale end via Paypal to US buyers only. Item will be shipped in a archival folder inside of a cardboard mailer via USPS First-Class Mail with tracking.
