Very Rare 19c Chinese Deeply Carved Sandalwood Clock Or Watch Holder, Box, Stand For SaleI am very excited to be able to offer this amazing and rare early 19c Chinese export clock or pocket watch holder, box or stand in all over deeply carved sandalwood. This fabulous carved display box or case was produced in Canton, China during the height of the "Old China Trade" era around c1840 or possibly earlier and was not one of the normal China Trade objects brought back to America but would have been purchased by most likely the ships captain for himself or for influential friends or family back home that he would have given it as a gift or would have been pre-ordered as this type of item would not have been inexpensive at all. This amazing case resembles the fine workmanship put into the high quality card cases, gloves boxes and a number of other confections sold in Canton during the 19c. This case is quite special containing the front panel and both sides being carved in the scenes of Chinese life with the central circular opening having a wide outlined band of very fine flowers, leaves and stems repeating again framing the whole outside edge of the front panel. The base has a nice English style of a cove with a continuous row of up and down single leaves standing on four ogee feet and the broken arch pediment top was done with both curved sides having relief worked designs containing citron fruit (Buddha's Hand) and the opposite arch withpomegranate on a wan fret background and the top lower center section is another design performed in much lower relief with all top edges having a pleasing ogee design treatment that replicates the top of the base section in shape. The back of this case has a swing out door when opened you can see how the outline of a pocketwatch is laid in resting on a fiber material. Condition is excellent with all the carved sandalwood areas in basically perfect condition with the exception of two small infills on the floral band around the front circular opening but very difficult to notice otherwise just light surface wear with lovely aged patina and the only flaws are that one hinge needs some attention and on the opposite side there was a simple brass latch that now is missing but still retains part of it held on by the screw and on the underside there appears to be part of an old "Christies" sale house label. Sizes: Height 6" x Width 4-3/4" x Depth 2-1/8". This is no doubt the most interesting early China Trade object I have had or seen in a very long time and must have been a special piece for the previous families who owned it as the condition is amazingly good so this is one of those objects that will most likely never come around for a long time if ever again so if you are a serious collector then you need to own this piece!
