Very Rare Antique Chinese Scholars Gu Vase Form Garden Pedestal - Kangxi Period For Sale
We are very excited to offer a rare example of an early Chinese Garden Pedestal. From time-to-time, a nice pair of garden seats is offered on and goes for a very good sum, but never have we seen a garden pedestal offered for sale! Quality old garden seats are not easy to come by, as they were requisite appointments for the scholar - used both outdoors and in. Today it is much more likely to encounter an example in a gallery than in a garden or home, so we are very pleased to offer this garden pedestal for sale. It is no doubt an example that would be right at home in a surrounding like the Apricot Garden.
The pedestal, or table, is potted in the form of a Gu Vase, a vessel for drinking wine or ritual libations. The sides have relief decoration reminiscent of lotus pods with key-fret borders at the waist and the foot. The body is splashed with a green and aubergine glaze.
The condition is very good. There is obvious wear to the glaze from use as a planter - it's possible that this could be cleaned off. There are minor flaws from firing in the body of the piece (please keep in mind - this would've been a large piece of pottery to fire). The piece is very stable. There is one evident small area of repair to the rim that has been filled - the repair appears to be several decades old. Expect minor nicks and scratches as well. The piece displays very well - please see the image of the piece in our gallery.
The piece has been examined by a certified appraisal expert in Asian art that does work for museums and art institutions across the US and Canada. It's his opinion that this is of the late Ming Dynasty period. We are selling it as Kangxi or possibly earlier. It is a genuine antique.
