Very Rare Rockford Silver Plated Mechanical Butter Dish Antique & Unique For Sale
Butter dishes were a popular
item in the Victorian household. Patterns on butter were popular and round
pounds of butter were made with patterns on the top. When served, the pattern
lent an extra elegance to the table. Often times, removable covers were placed
on the table which caused very difficult to remove stains on the lady of the
houses damask tablecloths that required a lot of ironing. Therefore, many
ingenious ways to prevent this from occurring were invented. One invention was
the Mechanical Butter Dish such as the one listed in this sale. The cover of
the butter dish is connected to a chain which is connected to a lever on the
top of the handle. When the lever is pulled upward, the cover rises and can be
set to stay on the top. When the lever is pulled downward, the cover is lowered
onto the butter dish.
We are offering for your
consideration a very rare and antique, Mechanical Butter Dish manufactured by
the Rockford Silver Plate company of Rockford, Illinois. The company was originally
named the Racine Silver Plate company but the name was renamed in 1882. This
mark was used between 1882 and 1925. This unique and rare piece measures 12.75
inches high, 7.75 inches wide from end to end on the handle and 5 inches wide
between the feet.
The cover of this stunning
butter dish is elegantly decorated with an etched floral and leaf design. The
finial spreads out like a flower. The
bottom of the butter dish is decorated with an elegant, heavily embossed floral
and scroll design framed at the top by a lovely gadroon pattern. Ornately
scrolled out feet, decorated in an open work, floral design which adds a
handsome visual appeal to the piece. The handle is decorated on the sides with
a lovely open work, floral design as is the handle and the lever which raises
and lowers the cover. As you are aware, an open work design is much more
expensive to manufacture than a closed one. Two knife holders are attached to
the back and hold a butter knife securely in place. A round insert sits in the
dish which allows any moisture to drip into the dish below. The butter dish
could also be used for a cheese ball with or without the insert in place. With
the insert removed, cranberry sauce or another condiment can be served from
this elegant dish.
Other than the patina or very,
very fine scratching found on estate pieces that gives it their luster, this
