A very well executed Victorian cameo portrait brooch, circa 1880.

Expertly hand carved in Whitby Jet to depict Bacchus or Bacchante, in stunning relief. The detail is very fine and crisp.

The impressive facial features and raised vine leaves in the hair serve as clear testimony to the skill employed by the 19th century jet carver.

The brooch has had an old repair to the right side outer border; it looks like a chip has been filled in with a black putty like material (see photos). There are also fleabites to outer frame at 5 & 7 o'clock.

The back of the brooch has the 19th century metal pin plate with tube hinge, pin and 'c' clasp. There is an excess of very old brown glue around the pin plate.

Measurements: 2" by 1.6" with 0.6" max depth.

Weight: 23.64gms.

A beautiful cameo carving with an antique repair to the outer frame, as seen in photos, which can be supersized for very clear detail.
