* Please see below for the various usages.* Hudson Maxim (February 3, 1853 – May 6, 1927), was a U.S. inventor and chemist who invented a variety of explosives, including smokeless gunpowder. Maxim was a man of many talents. He started his career in 1881 as the publisher of Real Pen Work - Self Instructor in Penmanship, a book addressing the arts of calligraphy and penmanship, and the sale of special inks, pens, and other supplies related to penmanship. Alden Knowles was an expert penman. Both illustrious men set out by trial and error to sell their ink and instructions for elegant writing styles and pen work. The history of their friendship and business relationship is fascinating and was recorded in the beginning of this book.In this age of advanced technology where computers have taken over the field, I'm sure one can agree that handwriting has now become a lost art. This book helps how to recreate that graceful script of old. In fact, this book was designed to be a self teaching aid, and it states by following the simple instructions, even for those who might not find that handwriting comes natural to, should be able to write in a beautiful elegant hand in an incredibly short amount of time. This book is accompanied by many delightful illustrations throughout, reminiscent of the Victorian Era. These authors stressed the importance of proper posture followed by scales for slants, analysis of capital and small letters, sample alphabets, and Spencerian scripts, as well they shared the "secret" of the tracing process. There are instructions for THE TRANSFER PROCESS. It truly is a class act book for its time as it boasts on the title page. It is well deserved of its high praise!
As a whole, this book contains copies, more ornamental work, and more and better instructions for learning the whole Art of Penmanship without a teacher, than any other work ever published in the World at the time of this printing. If you notice, the title page has a copyright of 1881, however, some pages within the book have copyrighted datesup to1884, therefore, we are assuming this is an early edition from 1884. The filled in "PRESENTED TO" pagealso substantiates a gift date of 1885.If you are wondering what Calligraphy is all about and how it can be used in the 21st Century, here is a list of ideas and projects with its application from A - Z:
