VINTAGE 1938 GRUEN Long Case - 46mm Art Deco - 10K GF - With Boxes - V. Rare:
$808.18

This watch has been in my family for over 55 years. I inherited the watch, together with 72 others, from my late father. He left me the following information regarding it.

It is rare, and highly collectable, being the 46mm  \'Jumbo\' long case model. It comes with inner and outer boxes. Width of case (widest) excluding the crown is 20.77mm.

The following markings are clearly visible in the watch case back (but difficult for me to photograph). They are:

Star Watch Case Co - number  850 888 and 501C-296.

Gruen Watch Co - Cased and timed in the USA

10K Gold Filled Bezel - Guildite back.

The case condition, bearing in mind that it is 79 years old, is in good overall condition. There is evidence of light scratching. Also, there is the possibility that the top right lug has had some sort of repair. It is very hard to tell, even with a loupe magnifying at 10 times. I do not honestly know, perhaps the markings are rubbing, and the gold fill has been worn. However, it certainly does NOT notice, unless magnified with a loupe.

The watch is in good overall working condition, and I have worn it many times on special occassions. It Is running on an original, Swiss made, manual wind movement.  A Gruen caliber 501, 15-jewel, with  Conoruma Hairspring & balance. The serial 2-1513351. The movement is marked Switzerland GXC.

Gruen, were at this time, pre WW2, at the very top end of watchmaking. At some time they had a collaberation with Rolex.

The watch dial is a little grubby when seen with an loupe, but when worn, it really isn\'t noticeable. I guess that the dial could be easily cleaned. In my opinion, it does not require restoration. But that is just a personal opinion.

The movement winds and sets nicely, and keeps time.

The strap is leather and 8.5\" long. I can supply a shorter strap if preferred.

A very attractive Art Deco period timepiece from a time when the name of GRUEN  ment the best in American watchmaking.

Part of my late father\'s watch collection. Please view the other watches listed. More will be listed in the coming weeks.

All watches listed as a fund raising exercise for my grand daughter\'s education.

Thank you.
