5 day auciton--
This very pretty, 8” Betsy Mc Call with her rare, side-part hairstyle is looking for a new home. She has been loved in the past and is not ‘mint’. She is hoping that she will prove to be an inexpensive model for one of the many Betsy outfits that you have collected, or perhaps a playmate for your child or grandchild. Please read the complete description BEFORE you offer. You will find that I am very picky in my description. BE SURE TO READ the whole description before you decide the amount you want to offer. If you have any questions, please ask so there won't be any misunderstandings!
Betsy’s positive points:
-- amazing, smooth and shiny LIGHT BOND hair rooted into a skull cap with BOTH ORIGINAL BARRETTES—in the RARE SIDE-PART hair style sold only in 1963, according to Betsy McCall-A Collector’s Guide author, Marci Van Ausdall.
-- pretty face complexion with no missing features, NO CHEEK RUBS and just the right amount of blush
-- lovely GREEN eyes with perfect upper lashes
-- eyes open and close on their own—may occasionally need a nudge to get them started
-- arms are on original rubber band, not loose, and will hold poses nicely (A little band has been added inside of the original to help it hold snuggly.)
-- knees bend with ease and hold a pose well
-- only torso seam cracked is the crotch (see description below)
-- clean, lighter pink EVEN SKIN TONE overall—not faded or yellowed by exposure to the sun or cigarette smoke
-- NO STAINS on torso, arms or legs
-- no thin dark crack/stress lines on the lower legs which is often seen on these vintage dolls
-- McCall mark in a circle on her back
-- I have not forced her to sit.
-- Her legs are stable enough to allow her to stand with careful positioning of her arms and legs.
(I am being very, very nit-picky about things that some other Sellers wouldn't have bothered listing and which may have gone unnoticed without my mentioning them. I do not believe that they take from her loveliness, nor her collect ability.)
-- head seams have narrowly opened: right side is about 1/8” long; left side narrow opening goes up to her ear
-- Her hair has 2 issues: -- rubber skull cap has 2 splits on the front edge where the hair was heavily rooted for the side part; -- hair is thin on the top of her head, not from wear, but was thinly rooted when the wig was made.
-- This is sometimes common as a result of old wig glue that got on her face when applied at the factory: yellow on one side of her face that the pulled-over bangs mostly hide.
-- crotch crack (less than 1/8” wide), legs are very wobbly, but do not fall out
-- left knee has several teeny cracks on the edge; right knee has a small sideways slice; both knees have a small flare
-- head has been reattached with elastic cording—It is not really a downside because many times a head that is reattached (elastic cording is all that you can get back up in there) is much sturdier than one with an original band that has loosened with age which makes the head ‘floppy’. However, a head without a sturdy original band might be of concern to a ‘purist’ collector. I want to be up-front with my customers so that they are not disappointed with what they purchase—a lovely, pre-loved Betsy!
Betsy is wearing the 1960-63 ‘Recess’ outfit. The dress looks great. The only ‘issue’ that I can see is that there are some missing stitches (with a long loose thread remaining) where the binding attaches to one of the sleeve. The binding on this sleeve is also a little dingy.
The matching panties are in nice, worn condition and have elastic that is still stretchy with no holes or stains. One end of the crotch seam needs a few stitches and the stitching on the elastic that connects it to the pink fabric looks rough—maybe the bobbin thread on the factory’s sewing machine was at the wrong tension…
The shoes are vintage originals to Betsy. Both shoes are still a nice white with solid knobs and only the teeny beginning of a split in the ‘buttonhole’ of one of the straps. The other shoe has No Split. I do not button the shoes any more to insure the integrity of these 50-year-old items!
*** These items came to me through purchases. I have a smoke free home and I do not smell unpleasant odors on them, but I cannot guarantee what environment they came from. In my opinion, even with her ‘issues’, this adorable girl will make an excellent addition to your collection.
