Vintage Hand Made Engraved Scrimshaw Coffin With Articulated Skeleton Inside For Sale
VINTAGE HAND MADE Engraved SCRIMSHAW COFFIN
with Articulated SKELETON Inside
I have been a dealer of antiques for over 30 years and am now starting to sell items from my personal collection I couldn’t resist this incredibly detailed coffin with an articulated skeleton inside. The coffin has a wonderful engraving of whalers in stormy seas fighting off a huge sperm whale. The coffin is nicely made with “nails” made of the same material. The extraordinarily detailed skeleton found in the coffin is articulated so it moves every which way. We had fun photographing it to show you its flexibility. The underside of the coffin is marked “In Memory of Ben Huggins 1st Mate Ship Lovely Matilda of Philadelphia. Died Whaling off Newfoundland 3rd Sept 1825”. I am not an expert about scrimshaw and know nothing about when it was made other than that I purchased it from an antiques dealer many years ago. The material from which it is made appears to be natural as it has uneven markings throughout. It appears to have been hand made. Don’t miss the opportunity to own this conversation piece.
No dents, breaks, cracks or repairs.
