This is an excellent Illinois RiverMallard Drake duck decoy from the famous Edward Keller rig near Bartonville, Illinois. The decoy is in excellent original condition with a very nice repaint by Edward Keller and the decoy carries his initials. The 2-piece hollow construction is excellent. The original keel strip weight has been removed. This decoy was collected by early decoy collector Gabe Junker directly from the Keller family. The Gabe Junker estate was sold in 2011. Gabe began decoy collecting in the 1940’s and owned over 3000 decoys. Gabe lived in Pekin Illinois, the heart of the Illinois river duck hunting area. He was collecting when the old wood decoys were being discarded and burnt and hunting rigs were being upgraded to the new fiber and plastic decoys that were just coming on to the market. He was able to purchase entire hunting rigs and this decoy is one that he collected. It is fresh out of a decoy rig (as it was found 60 years ago).
Not one of Junkers decoys was ever sold until the estate sale after his death. He was a large contributor of pictures and history to the book "Decoys and Decoy Carvers of Illinois" by Paul Parmalee and Forrest Loomis. Many of his decoys were pictured in that book. This is truly a great decoy with a great collection history. This is a classic Illinois RiverMallard in excellent condition with great form and style.
