Vintage Late 1960s 4 Ft 5in Tall Largest Paolo Soleri 122 Bronze Wind Bell Made:
*Unfortunate news: Paolo Soleri died on April 9, 2013 at the age of 93. He was loved by millions around the world for his contributions to the arts. He will be dearly missed.*
Up for sale:
This is a rare opportunity anywhere in the world to own an investment quality vintage Paolo Soleri 122 bronze wind bell. The 122 bronze wind bell is the largest production Soleri wind bell made. This rare late 1960s 122 bronze wind bell hanging in the tree is the only bell in this sale.
This 122 bronze wind bell was finished during the early days while Arcosanti and Cosanti were being built in Arizona, but most likely forged at Cosanti here in the Town of Paradise Valley in Scottsdale, AZ. The bell was made of a bronze/brass combination and the wind fins are made of thick, solid copper (thick copper is no longer used for the wind fins today). This 122 bronze wind bell is easily dated to late 1960s/early 1970s due to its unique art style of metal scoring the surface after the bell was cast. This practice of metal scoring stopped in the mid 1970s. Unfortunately, the original bronze link was missing from this bell so I had a one-of-a-kind bronze link forged by Cosanti in 2011 (receipt included). The new link was based on Paolo’s original design link for the current 122 bronze wind bells. Also, I had the three inside bell components updated from wire to natural brass finish chains. The staff at Cosanti recommended this action be taken so the bell would work better and at no risk to the value of the vintage 122 bell.
· The whole bell and its contents weigh around 80 pounds
· 122 Bell: 17 inches tall * 15 inches wide (For a size comparison, this bell is slightly larger than a NBA basketball)
· With the link: 33 inches tall
· With link and wind fins: 53 inches tall
Since I live in Scottsdale, AZ (My home is 1 mile away from Cosanti in Scottsdale, AZ and I have no affiliation with Cosanti), I was fortunate to get this Paolo Soleri 122 bronze wind bell authenticated by the staff at Cosanti (the home pictured is Paolo's house at Cosanti. Photography is allowed for all buildings on the premises). They were gracious enough to me to explain that the 122 wind bell and wind fins were made of brass, bronze, and copper. As of today, Cosanti wasn’t sure if Paolo forged this bronze wind bell or not. Paolo usually only crafted the special assembly aluminum/bronze links. However, they mentioned one of their most skilled artists ever to work at Cosanti, who is now dead, probably forged this bell in the late 1960s/early 1970s.
A near perfect beauty! There are no real condition issues. I talked to the Cosanti staff about the missing original link and they stated it doesn’t really affect the value of this stunning bell. This bell is so rare to find in this vintage late 1960s/early 1970s metal scored style and artisan designed craftsmanship. The 122 bells made today look nothing like this beauty and I attached photos of a new 122 bronze wind bell. The new 122 bronze bell's photos were taken at Cosanti and only attached for reference to show the many differences between my old bell and the new bell. The new bell is missing the metal scoring designs, multiple Cosanti logo design elements, and protruding metal elements like the rounded dots and metal rectangles. Not to mention, the colors are not as natural looking as my 122 bronze wind bell.
Also keep in mind: a Soleri bell and its link need to be beaten by Earth’s elements like Sun, sand, and rain to age to perfection. Arizona is the ideal place for the bells and their links to be beaten down by the Sun and sand. The Sun gives the bells and their links beautiful aged color.
My price for my late 1960s 122 bronze wind bell is a great investment due to its rarity and craftsmanship. Keep in mind; Cosanti does not give Insurance, sale, or current Market Price appraisals for vintage bells. My price is based on current market price appraisals on similar 122 bells of the same age, size, and quality.
After some thought and consideration, I have decided to make my final and only price cut on this piece on : from $6,995.00 to $4,995.00. I do not want to sale this piece for any less.
Thanks for looking!
