Vintage Mojave Lionel #408e 0-4-4-0 Elec Loco + #418, 419, 431, & 490 Pass Cars:
Up for offer is a vintage mojave standard gauge Lionel #408E 0-4-4-0 electric loco and accompanying mojave #418, 419, 431, and 490 passenger cars. Descriptions and conditions of the individual items are as follows:
Lionel #408E - this is a dual motor, Bild-A-Loco model. Both motors run on the bench, but with some reluctance -- it probably is long overdue for lubrication. The wheels are original (The Lionel Corporation, New York) but have degraded and will need to be replaced. The mojave paint is in very good condition and appears to be original with an old patina - very few small chips. It is dirty -- I have dusted the engine and cars but have not attempted to clean them more thoroughly (see photos).
Lionel #418, Parlor Car -- 18" L, lighted interior, lettering intact but faded, windows intact, paint good to very good, one side has a long scratch below the windows (see photos), dirty, has original oil seal.
Lionel #419, Combination Baggage & Parlor Car --- 18" L, lighted interior, lettering intact but faded, windows intact but loose & slipping down on one side, paint good but shows various areas of play wear, dent at one end of roof (see photos), sliding doors stuck in place so I have not attempted to force them, dirty, has original oil seal.
Lionel #431, Dining Car --- 18" L, lighted interior, lettering intact but faded, windows intact, some of the clerestory windows have been perforated, paint good to very good but with some paint loss around the edges, dirty, has original oil seal. (see photos).
Lionel #490, Observation Car --- 18" L, lighted interior, lettering intact and brighter than other three cars, windows intact except for one stained glass panel above main windows and one small perforation in a clerestory stained glass, paint good to very good with random areas of small scratches, one side has a long scratch below the windows (see photos), dirty, has original oil seal.
I am not a train collector or expert. Most of the description here is taken from notes left by my late father (the collector) and hanging out around him over the years. If I have rated this item as "Excellent" or "Good" for instance, it is from an amateur perspective, not that of a TCA member. Likewise, if I have stated that the item seems to be original, then I see no obvious signs of repainting or alternation but subtle indications may have alluded me. Again I am no expert and I have been fooled by well done restorations in the past. CAVEAT EMPTOR!
