In listing Nancy Drew, I have come acrossseveral questions about the series. Iwant to address a few points which I believe will help everyone whendetermining what is what in the Drew world.

David Farah is a gentleman who has devoted much time and effort in researching the print history and development of Nancy Drew. He has a very comprehensive guide which is updated every so often. The most recent is “Farah’s 12th Guide” and generally considered by both collectors and dealers the “bible” for Nancy Drew.

The copyright page of the Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, Dana Girls and other Grosset & Dunlap series books were not updated from printing to printing. This page was only updated when the book was revised.

A “First Edition” generally applies to the unchanged, original story.

A “First Print” is just that, the first time the title appeared in print.

Titles 1 through 34 in the Nancy Drew series were written originally with 25 chapters and 200+ pages.

Titles 35+ were originally written with 20 chapters and 180-189 pages.

Starting in 1959, all original stories (or “first editions”) were revised/edited. These new, revised stories, in some instances, are completely different from the original stories. Eventually, titles 1 through 34 were revised to contain only 20 chapters and 180-189 pages.

When reading the “Farah’s Number” shown on the chart below, here is what it means: The year shown is the actual print year. The letter is which printing of that year. The final number is what printing of that title this particular book is actually. So, in “The Secret of the Old Clock”, if it shows a Farah’s number of 1960A-86, we know it was printed in the year 1960. We know this was printed in the first print run of 1960, most likely early in the year. We also know this was the 86th printing of this title since the original was written in 1930.
