~VINTAGE SMALL 'LUCKY' BLACK CAT ~wind-up automaton?

A really cute little old black cat. He came to me with a collection of little old cats & dogs which I'm also listing today. This kitty is approx17cm or 6 3/4" high. He's quite firm rather than squashy & he has a little metal button thing in the centre of his back which looks like maybe he once had a key to wind him up...? He has an open mouth & the lower part can be moved so I wonder if he was made as an automaton. There is no key & I don't know for sure if this was the case so he's a bit of a mystery. I've shown him with some other dolls & bears to give an idea of scale but this listing is for the one cat only. Please note that he probably doesn't comply with current toy safety regulations so he's being sold as a decorative item only. He has a charming face & looks like he's just about to let out a big miaoww!
