Virgil

VIRGIL I. GRISSOM
Sending thanks after becoming America's second man in space.
TLS: "Virgil I. Grissom", 1p, 6½x7, blank margins neatly trimmed off. NASA, Langley Field, Virginia, 1961 October 13. To Miss H. Patricia Burkett, Girlhaven, Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. In full: "Thank you for your congratulations and thoughtfulness. Your reaction as a fellow American has been most heart-warming to me. I am very proud to have been a part of this step in our space program. I am happy to send a photograph as you have requested." Grissom was the second American astronaut in space, aboard Mercury-Redstone 4 named Liberty Bell 7. It was a 15 minute and 37 second suborbital flight on July 21, 1961. The flight was successful, but the spacecraft sank shortly after splashdown. Grissom wrote this letter 12 weeks later. When Grissom returned to space aboard Gemini 3 on March 23, 1965, the first manned Gemini flight, he nicknamed his spacecraft "Molly Brown", the name taken from the title of the 1964 motion picture, The Unsinkable Molly Brown. The successful flight, with astronaut John Young, orbited the Earth three times. Grissom was chosen, with astronauts Edward H. White II and Roger B. Chaffee, for the first manned Apollo mission in 1967. On January 27, 1967, during a routine training exercise on the launching pad, a fire in the command module of Apollo 1 killed all three astronauts. Authentic Grissom signatures are rare in any form Mounting strip on verso of top edge lightly shows through. Fine condition. Click image(s) to enlarge:
