VIntage E THOMAS & WILLIAMS Midget No. 1 Miners Lamp - Nice Original Example
This is an original ETHOMAS &WILLIAMS Miners Lamp. This particular lamp is known as the Midget and stands a little over 8" (20.3cms) tall.
As far as I can tell, the lamp is complete. External/cosmetic condition is excellent, with just some surface wear to the finish of the top section (see photos) and superficial dings and scratches to the brass lower sections; certainly no dents, cracks or repairs. The glass is slightly discoloured, with one or two minute chips to the inner rims, but otherwise it is complete with no cracks or other damage. The lamp has a wick and the relighter mechanism is in good working condition and can still be operated from the keyloop on the underside of the lamp. I guess it needs a new flint, as it does not spark, but as far as I can tell everything works correctly.
The lamp has two wire gauze heat shields, which are showing signs of superficial corrosion (see photos). I am not sure whether they may have been modified, but they each have a hole in the top; they are otherwise complete and in good condition.
The lamp still has the original "spring loaded" locking mechanism that folds down to prevent the lamp from coming apart, which is in good working condition.
I should perhaps mention the mechanism is quite oilly, which I suspect has served to keep it in good working condition - I understand it may be necessary to remove the oil to get a spark??
The lamp has residues of metal polish around the nooks and crannies, but this could easily be removed, so is only mentioned for the sake of complete accuracy.
The lamp carries it's original brass plate marked as follows:-
"EThomas &Williams Approved Under Schedule B, Cambrian Type No. Midget" It is also marked under with "No. 1" and "Makers Aberdare."
I am uncertain of the lamp's age, but would guess it may date to the 1930's/1940's. I would be very pleased to hear from anyone who might know it's precise age or have additional information about this lamp.
The lamp weighs 1.4Kgs, so once packed safely will weigh almost 2Kgs, which is reflected in my shipping quotes.
Photographs form a very important part of my description and therefore buyers are advised to study them carefully and to contact me for any additional information they may need.

On 24-Apr-13 at 15:24:33 BST, seller added the following information:
Please note: I have been advised that Royal Mail will NOT ship Miners' Lamps by Airmail and therefore this item can only be shipped by Surface Mail, which can take at least a month longer to arrive. Overseas shipping for this item will therefore cost £20 (GBP) for SURFACE Mail. UK shipping is unaffected. This has happened because they nowclass Miners Lamps as a restricted item due the the flammable liquids it may have once contained. I am very sorry for this inconvenence.
