LONDON: Printed by W. Boyer and J. Nichols for J. Nourse, MDCCLXXIV, 1774 [published date: 1774]. Rare First edition. 4to. 11.5" x 9.5" inches (LxB). Pp. viii, 253, [2, blank] pages + half-title, 3 folding engraved maps and 12 folding or double-page plates, 11 folding letterpress tables, half-title present, complete as issued. All edges sprinkled red. Fine original contemporary full calf leather boards, gilt decorated spine sympathetically rebacked in antique style, using matching brown calf leather, gilt decorated spine with 5 raised bands, the original red gilt lettered morocco label relaid. An important voyage into northern latitudes, including a young Horatio Nelson who served as a midshipman (aged 14) aboard the Carcass, which along with the Racehorse set sail in 1773 in search of a route to India via the Arctic while carrying out scientific and zoological research. Also on board was the astronomer Israel Lyons with various items of scientific equipment including two timekeepers sent by the Board of Longitude for testing: Kendal's K2 and a box chronometer by Arnold. Phipps also took a pocket chronometer by Arnold which proved to be more accurate than the others. The ships sailed north of Spitzbergen Island but were prevented by fields of ice from advancing further. The Appendix contains observations made in the course of the voyage and descriptions of scientific instruments used on the voyage. [Baillie p.297; Clockmakers' 701; Sabin 62572; Tardy p.198]. A classic work. Complete as issued. There are numerous close-up pictures of the contents given below; please click on them for a detailed description (See Scans below). Please take some time to view the 50+ pictures in detail, in order to gain a full idea of the contents and condition.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

Constantine John Phipps, 2nd Baron Mulgrave, PC (19 May 1744 – 10 October 1792) was an English explorer and officer in the Royal Navy. He served during the Seven Years War and the American War of Independence, seeing action in a number of battles and engagements. Inheriting a title, he also went on to have a successful career in Parliament, and occupied a number of political offices during his later years. .......Phipps was elected to Parliament in the 1768 general election as Member for the constituency of Lincoln.[1] On 4 June 1773 Phipps set off from Deptford on a voyage towards the North Pole. He had two ships, the Racehorse and the Carcass. Phipps took with him Dr Irving as naturalist and doctor, and Israel Lyons (1739–1775) as astronomer. The Carcass was commanded by Skeffington Lutwidge, while one of her midshipmen was a young Horatio Nelson. They sailed beyond Svalbard to the Seven Islands, but were forced back by the ice and returned to Orfordness on 17 September. During the voyage Phipps was the first European to describe the Polar Bear and the Ivory Gull, which were included in his A Voyage towards the North Pole undertaken ... 1773 (1774). Notably, the early descriptions of the characteristics of the polar bear in particular can be found in his voyage log book entries, dated 12 May 1773, and now kept in the British Library archives.
