This adorable little house and barn are hand made, and date to the 1920's. They are mounted on a single piece of wood, and have lots of detailing. There is a house, barn and even a trough for the little sheep. The piece comes from the Erzgebirge area of Germany, although it isn't marked. There are little trees, a fence and even a little loofah type hedge. The little sheep is tiny, measuring just 1/2" tall and 3/4" long. The entire piece (the wood it is mounted on) measures 4" long and 2" deep. The piece is a little piece of folk art - it is really gorgeous. There is a small break at the back of the barn, but overall it displays beautifully. There is something inside the house - it rattles when you pick the piece up. It has been driving me crazy! The little house and roof are solidly glued together - it must have been placed inside when it was made. I couldn't figure out how to find out without damaging the little house, so I have left it. I kind of think it might be another little animal. The little house has stairs on both sides, and a wonderful gingerbread trim. The little house is just the right size to go with the tiny people and animals that are also from this same area and time. I have some little trucks and other pieces that are just the right size for this house and barn combo.
The Erzgebirge area of Germany (an area, not a specific town) has been home to folk artisans for generations. Their Christmas decorations and toys are highly prized by collectors. At the turn of the last century through today they have specialized in making miniature villages, animals, people and everything that goes with them. In the 1920's these little hand made village sets and pieces were sold in specialty catalogs. One such seller was Louis Lange Publishing in Chicago, where these types of pieces were sold in their Christmas catalog.
