Vtg Deco Nouveau Victorian Brass Bird Snake Butterfly Filigree Sash Pin Brooch :
For your consideration is the most stunning and unusual sash pin I have ever seen. I think you will agree!
This is a beautiful Edwardian era sash pin in stamped gilt brass filigree and set with a large faceted oval amber jewelat the center. Two snakes wrap around the pin and each has a red jewel on their forehead and two small red jeweled eyes. There are two swallows in flight--one north and one south. Each swallow has a purple jewel for an eye. Look closely, and discover the two butterflies hidden in the filigree design--one east and one west of the center oval amber stone. Each butterfly has a golden jewel in the center.
This piece is remarkable! It measures 3.25" x 2.18" inches and it is in excellent condition. The only flaws I can see are a little finish wear or darker discoloration around the two round golden jewels that are at the center of the butterflies and on the reverse there is darkening around the base of the clasp (see the macro photos for the detail). Maybe this is just a patina given that the piece is nearly 100 years old...I am not sure.
Sash pins were popular from the late Victorian era through the 1920s. This piece dates to around the middle of that period. It fastens with a C catch and it is unmarked. It is quite large (sash pins generally were) and very attractive - a gorgeous bold statement piece.
